We are continuing to invest in making the experience of connecting your workloads, deployed on Equinix Metal, as seamless as possible. In doing so, we’re bringing our Fabric and Metal services closer together in a way that we hope will be exciting for our customers.
While building the groundwork for this experience, we're changing the behavior of the Metal API. Starting February 29th, 2024 you will have to specify your VLANs during the creation of new Virtual Connections, and you will no longer be able to make updates to the VLANs once the Virtual Connection is created.
Please take a moment to review any automation you may have around Interconnections to make sure you’re specifying a VLAN (or 2 for redundant connections) during creation. After reviewing our platform telemetry, we do know that almost every Virtual Connection being created today has a VLAN associated to it, so chances are good this change does not impact you.

Mexico is the world’s 15th-largest economy and the second largest in Latin America. Our data center in Mexico City serves as a strategic hub for connectivity to North, Central and South America. Local customers wanting to grow their presence in the region, or multinationals wanting a presence, can now deploy as-a-service bare metal compute with the Metal offering.
As is the case with our other recent metro additions, Metal joins Fabric and Network Edge to round out our digital services. m3.small's & n3.xlarge's are available on-demand and all of our other configs are available via reservation.
What better place to launch our first metro in India than in it's commercial capital - Mumbai (MB)!
For local customers, or global customers wanting an as-a-service presence in India, MB is India's only carrier and service-neutral data center that offers connectivity to a dense interconnection ecosystem of carriers.
As is the case with our other 2023 metro additions, Metal joins Fabric and Network Edge to round out our digital services. In terms of servers, m3.small's & n3.xlarge's are available on-demand. All of our other configs are available via reservation.

Metal is live in Miami!
Did you know that in addition top five beaches, Miami is ranked one of the top five most-connected cities in the world?
Considered the northern tip of LATAM, customers can access leading Latin American networks and reduce latency to the South and Central American markets.
Metal joins Fabric and Network Edge to round out our digital services. As always our usual suspects are available on demand - m3.small & n3.xlarge. And all of our other configs are available via reservation.

Metal Live in Manchester!
Looking for a little geo-redundancy in the UK? Our second UK location is live in Manchester.
We've got plenty of m3.small's online ready for you to deploy in minutes and all our other configs available for reservations.
As you may recall from this changelog post in 2021, we migrated from the legacy billing system used in our Packet days to our next generation billing system powered by Kill Bill, the open source billing and payments platform. After spending cycles for the last year finishing up these migrations and up-leveling the foundations of the billing platform, we’re pleased to announce the release of some quality-of-life enhancements requested by many of you during the course of this transition:
- Organization Owners, Admins, and Billing Admins can now download their Billing Account PDF invoice directly from the Console. Previously, this was only available via email during each billing cycle, and is now available for on-demand download via the Console.
- Owners, Admins, and Billing Admins can also download a CSV export which details the Service line items that tie to a given billing period / Billing Account PDF. This CSV file will give detailed breakdowns of services across an Organization’s Projects.
- Renamed the Billingsection of the Organization management toBilling Account.
- Removed HTML pages for viewing Service line items for a given billing period. Users can download the CSV for their respective billing period to view these line items going forward.
As always, if you have any questions or feedback to share, don’t hesitate to reach out. Onward!
Recall our Changelog from April: Bye Facilities, Hello (again) Metros
What's Changing
Over the last few years, most users have moved to take advantage of "metros" for supporting things like Location Diversity. To simplify our experience going forward, we will replace the “facility” attribute in the Metal CLI and API with the “metro” attribute, effectively deprecating the facilities concept on our platform.
Changes will be effective on:
- May 30th, 2023 for new customers
- December 1st, 2023 for existing customers
If you're still using the facilities in your automation, now is a great time to make the switch to metros! Take a look at the metro docs, facility docs, and be sure take a look at our various projects on Equinix Labs that utilize "metros" as well.
And if you still have questions, hit us up on live chat or support@equinixmetal.com.
If you’re running RHEL 7 or RHEL 8 on your Metal servers, your package updates for those two operating systems will come from a new location starting on May 12, 2023. That’s because we are moving our Red Hat Update Infrastructure cluster to a different data center.
If you’d like to continue receiving those updates, please, download (wget, curl or rpm are your friends) and install the following client packages from the machines running RHEL, before the switchover date:

A few years ago we introduced the concept of Metros to abstract the multiple data centers we operate in each region.
Why metros? Good question!
Our network is architected to span across all facilities in a metro, which means no matter which facility you're in, the experience (and super low latency) is the same. Think of a metro like an Availability Zone at AWS. This has the added benefit that users can grab inventory from across the entire metro without thinking about individual facilities. Winning!

When it comes to Network Edge locations, more is always better. Today we've opened up not one, but two, more places where you can deploy the VNF of your dreams.
- Mexico City (MX)
- Manchester (MA)
So if you're looking to establish a network presence quickly, easily, and without the need for space, power, or hardware, then we've got you covered. This might be especially interesting if you're already deployed in London, unlocking a truly geo-resilient network infrastructure within the UK market at just a few clicks of a button.
With these two additions, Network Edge is now available in 30 metro locations!
